Santiburi Samui Golf and Country Club
Santiburi Golf and Country Club is the latest addition to the golf course collection of Khun Santi, the tycoon owner of Thailand’s largest brewery, Singha. After building his Santiburi golf courses in Chiang Rai and Hua Hin, the profile of international standard golf in Thailand has reached new heights. Santiburi are also the sponsors of many international golf tournaments held throughout Thailand, and a championship is planned for Samui. The golf course was opened in 2004, and provides a major new attraction on Koh Samui.
The setting for the Samui golf course is spectacular, with 18 holes traversing the lush hillside above Maenam beach, on the north coast of the island. The greens are arranged over the course from an altitude of 30 to 220 metres. Sea views over the coconut groves below the course create a stunning backdrop to the well-planned and landscaped fairways. A clever use of water features throughout the course is seen with streams and waterfalls running down the mountain into a main lake reservoir, which provides the key ingredient to keep the greens plush. The 18-hole course is challenging, although not overly taxing, as caddie-chauffeurs are obligatory, and required to navigate the sprawling fairways. The all-female compliment of over 80 caddies is well trained, and highly competent behind the wheels of their carts.
Country Club consists of a clubhouse that includes banqueting and
conference facilities for 200, a well equipped pro shop, and a large
terrace restaurant overlooking the tropical golf course.
Open during daylight hours, from 6am-6pm, the golf course is very much the talk of the SE Asian golfing world, and considered a ‘must play’ for any enthusiast.
